How to Use Transparent PNG Overlays

Transparent PNG overlays are a simple way to add texture, detail, and visual interest to your designs without having to create the texture yourself. Because the background is transparent, you can layer the PNG directly over your artwork and combine it with colors, patterns, photos, illustrations, and other design elements.

A few ways to use them:

  • Add texture to backgrounds — Place an overlay over a solid color, gradient, or pattern to create a more interesting surface.
  • Create wall art — Layer overlays with typography, illustrations, photographs, or other graphics to create unique artwork.
  • Sublimation & apparel designs — Use overlays to add distressed, grungy, vintage, or artistic texture to your designs.
  • Create digital collages — Stack multiple overlays at different sizes, angles, and opacities for a layered mixed-media look.
  • Distress your artwork — Place an overlay above your design and experiment with blending modes and opacity to give clean artwork a worn or printed appearance.
  • Add depth and dimension — Combine several overlays, change their colors, and adjust transparency to create completely different effects.

Quick Tip

Don’t be afraid to experiment! Try changing the color of an overlay, lowering the opacity, flipping or rotating it, or experimenting with different blending modes. One overlay can look completely different depending on what’s underneath it.

In Photoshop, Procreate, Canva, Affinity, and many other design programs, simply import the PNG as a new layer above your artwork and start experimenting. Since the background is transparent, only the artwork contained in the overlay will appear.
